Game of the Year 2011: Vote Here

Hello anyone out there: I’ve got this Game of the Year poll that I run on some web forums I frequent. The way it works is that you rank your favorite games of the year– up to 20, though vote for as many or as few as you want– and the script will sort out the top 200 or so out of everyone’s votes. Here’s last year’s results if you want to see what this looks like (or previous years here). I will run this poll script for one week and then post the results. If you’d like to give it a try:

Vote here

When one week is up I will delete this post and post the results here on this blog. Thanks!

The most encouraging development this year was the realization that given enough time to breathe it’s entirely possible for a studio to develop a terrific game even if the concept itself is derivative. Dead Space 2, Gears of War 3, Arkham City, Uncharted 3– none of these were terribly original (in fact, all three are sequels of successful franchises) but in all three the developers were able to take a proven concept and make terrific games of them simply due to the fact that they weren’t forced to churn out a yearly sequel in that franchise. Meanwhile it’s become obvious that the CoD series now amounts to little more than a yearly subscription fee of $60 where play modes and maps cycle out every season.

Although none of the HD compilation packs were viable for this year’s poll, I do like the advent of these packs as they keep good ideas active and relevant in gaming culture. This is something I fear we lose in comparison to every other form of media– whereas The Return of the King is just as enjoyable now as it was when in 2002, the PS2 version of Metal Gear Solid 2 is a barely digestible mess of muddied textures. Hopefully this trend can evolve and improve and we can see out-and-out HD remakes of classics such as Deus Ex of Thief remade with new textures and modern gameplay elements.
